Earl Tosti held it before 1066; it paid tax for 3 1/2 hides. Land for 60 ploughs, of which 1/2 hide is in lordship; 2 ploughs there; 9 slaves; 38 villagers and 11 smallholders with 13 ploughs & the rest of the land. A mill which pays 6d; meadow, 8 acres; woodland, 40 acres; pasture 4 leagues long and 2 leagues wide. 52 sheep. It pays£10 10s of white silver; when William aquired it, as much. To this manor 1/2 hide has been added. Three thanes held it before 1066 and served the reeve of the manor as a customary due without giving any revenue. Land for 4 ploughs. 3 villagers and 23 smallholders. It pays20s into the Kings revenue; when William of Mohun aquired it, as much.

The name Winsford: is said to mean Wine’s place with a ford.

THE PARISH CHURCH OF ST. MARY MAGDALENE

The present church building is thought to date from the thirteenth century. It was substantially rebuilt during the sixteenth century and its 90ft tower is thought to have been completed about this time. Some restoration took place during the 1800s but the church retains most of its early detail The tower houses 6 bells, four dating from1765 and the other two 1842 and 1897.
