THE PARISH CHURCH OF ST. GEORGE

It is thought that the church dates from the 12th century, and was rebuilt during the 15th century. The 54ft. long, great Screen which divides the church was constructed in 1499 following a dispute between Monks and Parishioners. Large scale restoration work was carried out in 1875 and further restoration took place in 1966. The tower some 100 feet high houses 8 bells which were recast and rehung in1968. The tower clock dates from1876 and there is a seperate carillon which plays different tunes at set intervals each day.
